I found out today that I got accepted into Teach for America!!! =D They've assigned me to teach elementary school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The location was not one of my top choices, but I'm really glad I got assigned to elementary students.
So now, I just have to do some research and decide if I'm going to accept the offer. I'm pretty sure I want to, but I need to see what the process is like if after I finish Teach for America, I want to transfer my credential to California. I'd hate to teach for two years and then have to go back and take a bunch of courses before I could get another credential! And also, there's the weather issue. I HATE humidity, and from what I've read, Tulsa gets pretty hot and humid in the summers. Still, I don't think that'll keep me from accepting if that ends up being the only issue.
Anyway, I'm very excited, and thought I'd share the news!

Congratulations!

Date: 2009-11-11 10:26 pm (UTC)I did apply for a Fulbright. I don't know exactly when I'll be notified about that, but it'll be in the Spring. (They notify finalists in January, and then make the actual selections between February and May.) If I get the Fulbright, my first step will be to see if Teach for America will defer my acceptance for a year, so that I can do both. If they won't let me do that, I'll probably do Teach for America. Teaching in Korea would be a cooler experience, but teaching in the US fits better with my current career goals.

Date: 2009-11-11 10:38 pm (UTC)Yeah, the credentialing stuff is a hassle, particularly if you're switching states. Are you wanting to teach in the US after you get back from Lithuania?

Date: 2009-11-11 02:11 pm (UTC)I do believe that if you get a full certification (as opposed to probationary), that it will transfer with some paperwork being done, and (I think) if your PRAXIS scores are above that state's requirements. :)

Date: 2009-11-11 10:34 pm (UTC)I'll get a full certification after I complete my two years of teaching and all of Teach for America's training. I think for most states that's mainly all I need, but I want to double check on California. I know I'd have to do some paperwork, and take another test (CA doesn't use the PRAXIS), but I just want to make sure that's it. Of course, I may not ever end up moving back home to CA, but I'd like to keep that option open, because at the moment, I'd rather not move permanently that far away from my family.
